Job Description:
Are you ready to develop your career as a Privately Contracted (self-employed) English or Mathematics Tutor (online) at an exciting EdTech start-up and become one of our second batch of outstanding tutors? Are you eager to work in an entrepreneurial environment where you will quickly gain new clients and develop your tutoring business from day one? Do you want to regularly earn above market rates and get paid for your knowledge and experience?
We are HourPrep, a UK-based Online Prep School Platform that is bringing affordable tutoring, delivered by the best tutors, across core subjects, to students that want to learn.
What Sets Us Apart:
HourPrep is pioneering the development of structured group online tutoring classes that help promote peer-to-peer and collaborative learning whilst bringing down the cost per tutoring hour to students. We will also offer 1-to-1 tutoring for those students that require more bespoke support.
Our online tutoring provision in English and Mathematics will specifically help prepare students, both domestic and international, for challenging UK Independent (Private) and Grammar School entrance exams and for their GCSE and A-Levels. We also teach Young Learners 4+ who want to start preparing early.
English Tutors: We offer English tutoring in other entrance exam topics and areas, e.g., Verbal Reasoning, Creative Writing and Interview Preparation. We want to have a small selection of tutors that can help teach our students to GCSE / iGCSE / A-Level.
Mathematics Tutors: We aim to offer classes in Problem Solving, Logic and Interview Preparation. Again, we want to have a small selection of tutors that can help teach our students to GCSE / iGCSE / A-Level.
As a start-up, HourPrep is aiming to recruit its next batch of highly driven Private English and Mathematics Tutors that will become part of our Tutoring Team and become the foundation from which the online tutoring business will continue to grow.
What We offer:
HourPrep offers all its online tutors the chance for flexible working hours and the potential to generate additional income well above average for delivering structured group classes and 1-to-1 learning. We have a unique tutoring business model which helps solve two of the main concerns of tutors within the marketplace:
#1: Number of hours available. Many tutors state that students are hard to come by, which makes growing a good wage difficult when you take into consideration the time outside of the lesson that is unpaid, such as preparation or marking = earning potential is restricted by the finite number of hours available.
#2: Standing out amongst the crowd. In an industry with no compulsory formal qualifications or regulation, most online tutoring platforms have scaled fast to include far too many tutors. Students have an overwhelming amount of choice, which often leads to selection based upon cheapest price = earning potential is restricted by a race to the bottom to become cheaper (commoditisation).
We are doing things differently!
Our business model is primarily performance driven and rewards tutors that: 1. consistently fill group classes with students, 2. deliver exciting 1-to-1 sessions, and 3. grow their “ranking” on our Platform. Tutors’ earnings are primarily based on a Base Fee + various 'Performance Bonuses' weighted by tutor ranking and other attributes, which are calculated automatically by our proprietary tutoring service delivery algorithm.
Working Flexibility (timings):
Primary Market: UK domestic market - where students are typically available post 4pm (UK time) weekdays and at weekends. We are very keen to hear from tutors that can commit to delivering online tutoring during these times to our UK students.
Secondary Far Eastern Markets: China, Hong Kong, and South Korea - where the time difference is ahead - require tuition to take place in the morning and early afternoon (UK time) on weekdays and weekends. We are not really recruiting tutors for this market in this round - but if you have morning availability as well as availability in the evenings, that would be a bonus.
If tutors can’t commit to delivering online tutoring during these timings, or have limited tutoring availability, then we strongly advise they don’t apply.
Your role:
You will be a privately contracted (self-employed) tutor with a contract for services agreement signed between you and HourPrep.
HourPrep will be operating as an Employment Business, whereby we engage with subcontracted self-employed tutors to provide services on behalf of our company to our clients. As such, our chosen business model for delivering online tutoring services falls within the scope of the provisions of the Employment Agencies Act 1973 (the Act) and Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003 (the Regulations) – both as amended – as they might apply to services that operate as a tutoring service.
You will be responsible for the scheduling and delivery of highly engaging classes and regular homework to our students. Group and 1-to-1 Classes are all 1-hour long and delivered via our own Virtual Classroom or via Zoom. We pay our privately contracted tutors at the end of each month according to the number of classes (Group and 1-to-1) delivered.
There is also opportunity to get involved in the development and marking of our own in-house Mock Entrance Examinations, creation of ‘paid-for’ learning materials and development of our tutoring business model, which will all provide additional earning potential.
We offer our Online Tutors:
Flexibility - You can set your own working hours, schedule classes and class content, and do as many or as few as you like. However, we suggest you commit to delivering at least 8 group classes each month. Working online means you can work from the comfort of your own home, with no time or money spent on marketing or travel. All you need is a computer and an internet connection. We do the rest.
A rewarding experience - Share your knowledge and help the next generation of students achieve their learning goals and reach their potential. As a private tutor, you are essentially running your own business and demonstrating your advanced soft skills (great to put on your CV). Tutoring students in the group environment and 1-to-1 allows you to make a real impact in their lives. You also get to continually add to your own knowledgebase and reinforce your own skills.
Virtual Classroom - Our Virtual Classroom is specifically designed for online tutoring and maximising student engagement. The digital whiteboard, breakout rooms, and moderated Q&A will keep students focused, active, and happy. On-screen quizzes and polls will keep them focused, interacting, and ensure they are absorbing the learning material.
Best Resources - Gain access to some of the best resources from leading institutions to help you deliver exciting lessons. We have a huge selection of resources in our School Library, that our tutors can gain access to in order to improve their classes and develop their student’s academic performance. You will also have your own area within our Learning Management System (LMS) where you can organise your materials and prepare for classes in advance.
Get well paid – Our business model is performance based. The more classes (both Group and 1-to-1) you teach and the better the feedback you receive, the more you will earn. With students across the globe, you can schedule Group and 1-to-1 Classes across time zones and supercharge your earning potential.

Are you a:
- Fully Qualified Teacher – essential (QTS)
Do you have a:
- Current enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check - highly desirable*
*At present, the lack of regulations regarding DBS checks for private tutors, including online tutors, is viewed as a dangerous loophole by a number of organisations including the Tutors’ Association, the NSPCC and the National Education Union (NEU). Given that HourPrep operates as an Employment Business with our services falling within the scope of the provisions of the Employment Agencies Act 1973 (the Act) and Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003 (the Regulations) – both as amended – as they might apply to services that operate as a tutoring service, we must fulfil the necessary safeguarding, health and safety and other checks required under the Act (these go beyond an Enhanced DBS). We will, therefore, require all new privately contracted tutors that we select to undergo an Enhanced DBS Check if they haven't already done so or if they are not current. The DBS will work in your favour, acting as proof that you have a clean record and that you do not pose a danger to children. It is also critical to our safeguarding policy. Further details on our DBS policy will be made available to successful candidates called forwards to interview in due course.
Do you have:
- At least 5 years’ teaching experience - essential
- Bachelor's or higher in English or Mathematics - highly desirable
- PGCE in English or Mathematics – highly desirable

- UK domestic market - where students are typically available post 4pm (UK time) weekdays and at weekends.
Other administration points:
- We will check that applicants for the role are legally entitled (possessing the relevant immigration status where relevant) to work in the UK on a self-employed basis.
- We will require all prospective privately contracted (self-employed) tutors to submit valid identification prior to them being formally asked to sign a contract for services. We will need photographic ID, as well as proof of address. It is critical to our safeguarding policy that we are able to verify the identity of our online tutors.
- We will require two positive references from all applicants for the role. Ideally any references will come from students or tutors or teachers that you’ve worked with previously.
Number of positions to fill = 5+
What happens next?
Once selected, you will play a crucial role in assisting HourPrep in developing its innovative business model and ensuring product-market fit. This is an exciting opportunity to join us in time for the UK Summer Holiday Tutoring Season and expand your self-employed tutoring business with our support.
You will receive training on using our Virtual Classroom and Learning Management System (LMS) and have the opportunity to conduct test classes with real students. Further details will be provided to successful candidates who are invited for an interview in due course.
We look forward to hearing from you!
